Remote therapeutic monitoring opened remote-care billing to rehab providers, but clinics often ask exactly who is allowed to bill it. Here is who can bill RTM and what that means for your practice.
Providers who can bill RTM
RTM can be furnished and billed by qualified healthcare professionals who can bill the treatment-management codes, including:
- Physical therapists (PTs)
- Occupational therapists (OTs) — see RTM for occupational therapy
- Speech-language pathologists (SLPs)
- Physicians and other qualified healthcare professionals
Why RTM matters for rehab therapists
Unlike remote patient monitoring (RPM), which is generally limited to physicians, RTM was built so that rehab therapists can bill it directly. That distinction is the whole reason RTM is such a strong revenue opportunity for PT, OT, and SLP clinics. Read more on RTM vs RPM.
Can assistants deliver RTM?
PTAs and OTAs may furnish portions of RTM under the supervision rules that apply to your setting and state, with the supervising therapist or qualified provider as the billing provider. Always confirm the supervision requirements for your practice type.
What you need to bill RTM
Patient consent, a qualifying device or software that collects therapy data, accurate time tracking, and proper documentation. See the full RTM FAQ or our CPT code guides.
